Optimized Schwarz Methods for the Bidomain System in Electrocardiology
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Bidomain model is nowadays one of the most accurate mathematical descriptions of the action potential propagation in the heart. However, its numerical approximation is in general fairly expensive as a consequences of the mathematical features of this system. In this paper we analyze an Optimized Schwarz approach for the numerical solution of the Bidomain problem. The convergence of the iterative method is studied by means of a Fourier analysis, and we investigate the parameter optimization in the interface conditions. Numerical results in 2D and 3D are given to corroborate our results.

Multilevel Schwarz preconditioners for the Bidomain system and applications to electrocardiology
Mathematical modeling and computer simulation has become in recent years an important support to experimental studies, for investigating the bioelectrical activity in cardiac tissue. The most complete mathematical model of electrocardiology is the Bidomain model, a degenerate parabolic system of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations, coupled with a system of ordinary differential equations. In...
متن کاملMultilevel Schwarz and Multigrid preconditioners for the Bidomain system
Two parallel and scalable multilevel preconditioners for the Bidomain system in computational electrocardiology are introduced and studied. The Bidomain system, consisting of two degenerate parabolic reaction-diffusion equations coupled with a stiff system of several ordinary differential equations, generates very ill-conditioned discrete systems when discretized with semi-implicit methods in t...
متن کاملOptimized Schwarz Methods and model adaptivity in electrocardiology simulations
The Bidomain model is nowadays one of the most accurate mathematical descriptions of the action potential propagation in the heart. However, its numerical approximation is in general fairly expensive as a consequence of the mathematical features of this system, and several works have been devoted to devise effective solvers and preconditioners, [15, 11] among others. A simplification of this mo...
متن کاملParallel coupled and uncoupled multilevel solvers for the Bidomain model of electrocardiology
The Bidomain model describes the spread of electrical excitation in the anisotropic cardiac tissue in terms of the evolution of the transmembrane and extracellular electric potentials, v and ue respectively. This model consists of a non-linear parabolic reaction-diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) for v, coupled with an elliptic linear PDE for ue. The evolution equation is coupled thr...
متن کاملOptimized Schwarz Coupling of Bidomain and Monodomain Models in Electrocardiology
The Bidomain model is nowadays one of the most accurate mathematical descriptions of the action potential propagation in the heart. However, its numerical approximation is in general fairly expensive as a consequence of the mathematical features of this system. For this reason, a simplification of this model, called Monodomain problem is quite often adopted in order to reduce computational cost...
